Vermont Lottery numbers
The Vermont lottery has one of the highest counts of available state and multi-state lottery programs in the form of both drawing-style lotteries and scratch-off lottery tickets. With 9 total drawing-style programs, and online lottery usage, Vermont also has one of the most popular state lottery programs in the U.S. today. The state is also one of the few where people who are under the age of 18 years old may receive a lottery ticket as a gift, and- although they aren't allowed to buy the ticket- if the ticket is in fact a winner, they may legally collect the prize from the drawing or scratch-off ticket. Vermont is also unique in that it’s second-chance drawing is used to promote the recycling of losing lottery tickets.
Vermont Lottery History
The state of Vermont has one of the oldest and longest-running lottery programs in the U.S. In 1978, the state of Vermont received $250, 000 in seed money from the federal government after a State Lottery Commission had been voted into office. This seed money was used to begin the first drawing-style state lottery and the first scratch-off ticket games.
The first drawing-style game was called the Green Mountain Game, and a weekly drawing was held. That same year, the lottery commission introduced the scratch-off ticket Scratch’n’Match. This means 1978 was the first playable year for the Vermont state lottery.
Vermont Lottery Proceeds
Since the year 1999, the state of Vermont has used the proceeds from the weekly lottery ticket sales to fund many of the educational programs that have been instituted throughout the state. Every year the lottery program generates over $430 million for various state educational programs, with the lion’s share going back into the community in participant payouts. The lottery also sustains itself through the ticket sales, making it a highly efficient revenue generator for the state, and allowing the lottery program itself to put almost $100 million back into the Vermont communities that need the money the most.
