The Virginia lottery is fairly young when compared to some other US state lotteries, having only been introduced on September 20, 1988. Despite its late start, just eight years later, on August 31, 1996, Virginia became one of the first states to offer the Mega Millions lottery game, which was known at the time as 'The Big Game'.

The VA lottery now offers a number of Virginia-only games including Cash 5, Midday 4, Midday Cash 5 and Pick 4. Virginia Cash 5 and Midday Cash 5 are by far the biggest of these lotteries, as both feature jackpots of $100, 000, which can be claimed with just five winning numbers. Also available from the VA lottery are fast play and scratcher games, which can create big winners in the time it takes to scratch a card.

In 1999, the Virginia lottery pledged to give 100% of its profits to public education and, as a result, has donated more than $7 billion to the state's schools. The Powerball and Mega Millions lottos are extremely popular with lucky Virginia residents as their winning numbers have provided many players with huge jackpots. And it's only going to get better, as in August 2010, the lottery began offering the Mega Millions Megaplier option to VA Mega Millions players.

The Virginia lottery also offers the Win for Life lotto, which provides players with eight ways to win six different prizes. The grand prize is an incredible $1, 000 every week, for the rest of your life. Players can look out for winning lottery results on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 11 p.m. when drawings are made. In order to take part in the Win for Life lottery, players are required to select six lotto numbers from 1-42, as well as a Free Ball from the remaining unpicked numbers.

In October 2008, the Virginia lottery was surrounded by controversy as hundreds of players thought that they had won prizes on the state's Fast Play Super 7's game, as several winning tickets were distributed by electronic lottery terminals. Unfortunately, for the players, some of whom had won as much as $7, 777, the wins turned out to have been caused by a computer glitch and were voided by the lottery. However, to compensate the players, the VA lottery paid out prizes at a reduced rate, with the $7, 777 jackpot winners receiving an estimated $2, 000 from the state's Player Recognition fund. Mistakes like this are very rare and in most cases (like in Virginia) the lottery will payout at least part of the prize.
