Stores in the Plymouth-Canton area were bustling Friday as buyers scooped up massive numbers of Mega Millions lottery tickets with hopes of securing a piece of a $640 million nationwide jackpot.
Tina Cremen of Canton was among those in line at in Plymouth after work Friday. She bought seven tickets.
Johnny Arafat, owner of Belly Buster's, said sales of the tickets had been steady as Friday's business day wound down. Many stores reported long lines as residents stopped to buy a ticket — or several — on the way home from work.
"We've been busy all day with food and lottery, " Arafat said.
If someone who bought a ticket from his store hits the jackpot, Arafat said he gets paid a bonus from lottery officials.
While not mandatory, it also is customary for lottery winners to tip the salesperson who sold them the ticket.
Ticket buyers had big dreams for what they would do with the money if they had won.
Cremen said she would take the cash payout and invest it.
The jackpot was worth $462 million if a sole winner takes the cash payout.

The best odds in the nation can be found in Massachusetts, but even up there you're looking at a 72 cents payback on each $1 lottery ticket. And the average payout is just 60 cents.
