History

Originally called The Big Game, it was launched in September 1996 by only six participating states.

It didn't become Mega Millions until May 2002, when the name was changed. This coincided with not only more states joining, but also a change in the way the lotto was played. The ability to rollover was introduced as well as changing the number of balls drawn and a new minimum jackpot of $12 million (USD).

In October 2012, the Mega Millions was revamped, the number of main balls was changed from 56 to 75 and the Mega Ball range was changed from 46 to 15. The minimum jackpot and lower prize divisions was also changed - improving the overall winning odds to 1 in 15. The Megaplier range was also changed.

By joining together, the member State Lotteries are able to offer players Jackpots that start at $12 million (USD). The jackpot is won by matching all six winning numbers in the draw and rolls over until someone wins!
