Schuyler County Man Wins $1, 000, 000 New York Powerball Prize
Doid Kerns, of Valois, Schuyler County won a $1, 000, 000, Mega Millions, and Powerball. He was running errands on the day of the drawing and decided to buy a Powerball ticket while he was in the Dandy Mini Mart at 4083 Lake Avenue in Burdett.
The day after the drawing, June 5, Kerns went to the Shursave in Trumansburg in Tompkins County to check his ticket, and that’s when he found out he was a big winner.
“I saw the dollar amount of $1, 000, 000 come up and I was stunned. Really very shocked. I couldn’t believe it, ” said Kerns. He said everyone in the store immediately started congratulating him and wishing him well.
The $1, 000, 000 Powerball second prize is paid out as a one-time lump sum payment. Kerns will receive a net check totaling $661, 804 after required withholdings. Kerns said his plans for the prize money are to pay off his house and share some with his family.
He is the 84th New Yorker to claim a New York Lottery prize of $1, 000, 000 or more so far this year.
The New York Lottery contributed $2, 966, 971.99 in Lottery Aid To Education to school districts in Schuyler County during fiscal year 2013-2014.
