Texas Lottery History
The Texas Lottery was initiated in 1991. On July 11th of that year, legislation was created to promote the idea of a state lottery. By August 19th, the Comptroller’s Lottery Task Force was formed and begins to make initial preparations to begin the lottery in the state of Texas. The creation of the Texas Lottery experienced its first victory when the Governor of Texas signed and approved House Bill 54 initiating the Lottery Act. However, the Act would still require voter approval in order to be successful. On November 5th, the voters of Texas approved the Lottery Act by an overwhelming two-to-one vote. On November 20th, 1991, Nora Linares was appointed as the first Director of the Texas Lottery and on December 16th initial prospects were made for retailers in the state Texas. On May 29th of the following years, the Texas Lottery is officially launch and the first tickets go on sale at over 6, 500 retail locations 47 days ahead of schedule. The first week of sales exceed $102.4 million to set another world record. From the initial launch of the lottery in the state of Texas, the lottery has grown exponentially to include many types of games and a whole multitude of prizes.
